Pope Joan are a leftfield-pop four-piece from Brighton. Falling somewhere between the kinetic playfulness of Les Savy Fav, the quirky pop of early-era XTC and the sonic spectrum of TV on the Radio, Pope Joan build their art-pop around walls of ambient processed guitar noise, furious drum lines and driving 8-bit synth keyboards.
In 2008 Pope Joan released their critically acclaimed debut mini-album 'Hot Water, Lines and Rickety Machines' on OIB Records along with the albums single ‘No TV’. This was followed by the double A-side single 'Volumes // Centurions' that quickly established them as one of the most exciting new bands in the experimental British art-pop scene.
Over the past two years Pope Joan have shared the stage with The Vaccines; Maps and Atlases; Fools Gold; Theophilus London; The Fall; and the Invisible.
"A colourful explosion of post punk adorned, effects laden guitar lines, quirky synth noises, elasticated bass lines and creative drum patterns topped off with an undeniable pop sheen." - Artrocker

It’s a multi-genre showcase of just how wide Brighton’s musical spectrum is, and a love-letter to the town that allows this type of shenanigan to thrive.
Across the 18 tracks you’ll hear the cool surf-rock of The Squadron Leaders and the Sticks; the slick pop perfection of Pope Joan and Nullifier; the enveloping folk-noir of Sons of Noel and Adrian and Birdengine; the 8-bit brutality of Drum Eyes and Soccer96; and the harsh garage rock of Illness and Cold Pumas; alongside a whole host of other artists and genres.
