by Tommy G Imagine tying a man’s legs together and throwing him into a muddy ditch on a cold winters night. The result (when he gets up) is moody, slow moving, and rather dark just like Mogwai’s latest record. This is a very different sound to the Mogwai that produced ‘Happy Songs’ and ‘Mr Beast’. This is electronic soundscape music along the lines of Pan American or Stars of the Lid albeit with a very beautiful but sinister edge. It is good to see the band branch out in a new direction, their last few efforts have been good but not spectacular and this release sees them hark back to their roots and try something new all at the same time. It is a fitting piece of music to encompass the career of the great Zidane, his shimmering brilliance being replayed in slow motion but with the sour memories of that infamous headbutt never letting go. A funeral dirge for all the moments of his greatness that may now be forgotten on the back of one moment of senselessness. Only time will tell. |
