SJ ESAU - THE WRONG FACED CAT FOOD COLLAPSE (Anticon)

by Bootleg Al

With the exception of ‘Elephant Eyelash’ by Why? Anticon has been in recent danger of falling flat and sterile. Then all of a sudden Baillie (Mr Anticon) decided to look beyond the creativity happening around him and expand his insane roster to include such international delights as Bracken (Chris Adams of Hood) and Bristol’s finest SJ Esau.

The history of SJ Esau is truly incredible. Signed at the tender age of just 10 SJ, or rather TFP as he was then known, was already 2 years into his 4 year infatuation with rap-music. Then after placing second at the prestigious DMC rap championships SJ retired from the rap game at the peak of his career…..he was just 12!

As his interest in rap music waned over the years SJ began to take a deep interest in a vast plethora of musical genres as he tried his hand at sonic noise, raw acoustic exploration, electronic loops and avant-pop. Wrong Faced Cat Feed is the organic culmination of all the above. It’s the record that would take most artists a lifetime to create. It’s a beautiful record of, almost comedic, perfect pop gems that are constructed upon a rich bed of vocal, electronic and organic loops. It’s exciting and youthful but all the time infused with a rich, mature musical history.

Live SJ Esau is a wonder to be hold. Shying away from ‘the lazy musicians’ dependence upon pre-recorded tracks, SJ opts for a more organic construction as he painstakingly loops every part of the track, no matter how technical, with exact precision. He truly is the one-man band for the 21st century.

Anticon I salute you, you’ve gone done it again.
