TOOL – 10,000 DAYS

by Richard ‘the Ninja’ Colwill

I’ll say this now, if you do not like Tools previous music then you’ll find this release hard to absorb. The opening track ‘Vicarious’ starts off with guitar tones reminiscent of ‘The Patient’ before kicking into an anger rant at US society through the eyes of a television. The second track ‘Jambi’ has some amazing percussion and fully utilizes the vast potential of Maynard’s vocal chords. ‘10,000 Days’ continues in the classic Tool tradition of flowing samples, particularly in ‘Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman)’ during with a British doctor is talking to a nurse about a damaging and deranged Maynard.

Tool’s song writing skills have clearly evolved since writing their previous record ‘Lateralus’, with this album containing certain poly rhythm tempos in-keeping with past touring partners Meshuggah. ‘Right in Two’ is the highlight of this record and has the power to send shivers down your spine just at the right moment. Finally ‘Viginti Tres’ shows a venture into ambient soundscape work and is the perfect outro to such an epic piece of work. No questions asked this will be hailed as album and artwork (the case is a set of mind bending 3D glasses) of the year.
