by Inept-x Being painfully unaware of Daniels music (maybe a good thing) as well as his life story I was intrigued enough by all the hype that I checked out this supposed masterpiece (it won something or other at Sundance). I was most certainly not disappointed. It’s a very moving and inspiring movie that unlike most biographical documentaries was never boring or sterile. Daniel Johnson for those of who like me lack in prior knowledge, is an American singer-songwriter who at his most prolific in the early 90s wrote some incredibly pure, passionate, raw, emotional and exciting music. Championed by Sonic Youth and Kurt Cobain, Daniel Johnson was on the brink of international success when his mental health deteriorated rapidly. Continually in and out of mental institutions for the next 10 years Daniel mentally fought with the battle of good verses evil. Believing that to achieve acknowledgment and success was to accept the devil into his heart while at the same time wishing to use his success as a platform to preach the word of God, Daniel was continually battling a mental paradox. Now living with his parents Daniel is still making music with a local or is that yokel band. A highly entertaining and exhilarating masterpiece. |
