by the Rohan Released as a companion piece to their Debut ‘proper’ ‘New White’, this record is far from a stop gap before the new LP ‘For Hero: For Fool’ drops in early summer. The theme here is celebrating the work Subtle have achieved with their friends, be it remixes or reworkings of tracks from ‘New White’. The DVD contains three videos including the award winning F.K.O. video by regular collaborators SSSR. Brooding and sinister the hand drawn animations set off the music perfectly. Much like previous Dose One material (most notably Themselves) the remixes often surpass the original recordings and bring new ideas to the fore. ‘The Long Voice of the Law’ finds Mike Patton following on from the ideas he worked on with Bjork on ‘Medulla’ and turning in a stunning vocal remix which is truly the standout track on the record. Vocals are sped up and slowed down as they duck and dive around each other to dizzying effect. Elsewhere Hrvatski is given his turn to take on Subtle’s work, and we also see the band apply their own remixes to Beck on ‘Farewell Ride’ and Ms John Soda, which finds Dose whistling and stuttering his way through a gentle post-Fourtet piece, accompanied by mournful cello. While perhaps not quite matching the consistent brilliance of ‘New White’ there is much here to love, and should leave fans salivating for the next instalment of the Subtle story.
