REGINA SPEKTOR
LIVE AT 9:30 CLUB 16/4/06

by 'Copy Illegally' Al

The O.C. changed my life. While but a few years ago I was happy living in a pebble-beach fronted hovel surfing the poverty line I now won’t stand for anything less than an Orange County mansion opening out onto a white-sand beach with a beautiful surgery enhanced wife and spoilt, brattish and brooding teenage kids. And as for Anna…..don’t even get me started on Anna.

Entering the 9:30 club in D.C. on a wet and windy evening was like stepping through a portal into the ‘Bait-shop’ (the club in the O.C. for those not in the know). The club was so much more than just a venue, it’s a restaurant, a coffee bar, a hang-out lounge and of course concert space. As I stand there sipping my espresso listening to the kooky odd-ball sounds of the Brooklyn via Moscow singer Regina Spektor sing songs about every kind of love imaginable I’m quickly and effortlessly transported to a fantasy land far removed from the harsh realities and inequalities of this world.

I do a quick mental scope of the floor for Anna thinking that I might bump into her, share a few jokes about Death Cab and Motion City Soundtracks before breaking a Mocha together and living out our happy emo life ever after. Needless to say I didn’t find her but for those 45 minutes that Regina played I was more content than I have been in years.
