by Steveo Weston Tonight is the first night of a much needed headline tour by arguably the finest experimental band this troubled island has produced in its last decade. With a (stunning) new record to promote it would be natural to expect an element of nervousness, missed notes or wrong turns. Instead, from the moment they stride into view in the matching green Adidas tops of their beloved Celtic and the beautiful pulse of 'Auto-Rock' begins to fill the ears, it is clear that this is a band still utterly in love with the music they create and still wholly capable of blowing the audience's minds just like they always did. Over the course of the next hour and a half the stunning noise that these five guys create keeps your attention fixed upon them completely, from the rolling piano crescendo of new single 'Friend of the Night', to the slow-burning elegance of 'Cody' and the sheer menace of 'Hunted by a Freak'. The only downside to tonight’s set is its reliance on promoting the new record but really it would be churlish to complain when 'Mr Beast' is as good as it is and also when they nod to their past by playing a churning, mesmerising 'Summer' and a truly sky-scraping version of 'Helicon 1'. Closing the gig with a version of 'Glasgow Mega-snake' that strips the paint from the venue's walls with sheer awesome volume there is abundant evidence that Mogwai are still as potent a force as they were when 'Young Team' first blew your mind ten long years ago. Go see 'em, you owe it to yourself.
