by Alex Murray English kids look out of place in the run-down yet trendy quarters of DC. Arriving characteristically late at the ‘DC9’ we’re quickly ushered through an intimidating heavy red curtain into an attic room very reminiscent (I’d imagine) of 1940s alcohol and gambling dens or early 90s back-alley strip clubs. As I scope the room feeling painfully uneasy and British ‘Unearthly Trance’ blast through their arsenal of dirty annihilating hardcore hits. Having clocked Lair of the Minotaur menacingly loitering in a pack by the merch stand and a group of younger metal trendies loitering by the bar with what was obviously the ‘local’ support I quickly realise that we constitute 2 of the barely15 paying patrons here tonight. However such a low attendance doesn’t hold ‘Lair’ back from destroying DC9 with an amalgamation of brutally ‘heavier than thou’ stoner sludge wrapped up in moments of doom and even thrash. Drawing from a selection of tracks from their most recent and painfully underrated album ‘Ultimate Destroyer’ as well as ‘hits’ from their previous ‘Carnage’ debut Lair manage to turn just 20 uneasy onlookers into a salivating heaving mass hanging on their every gurned and grunted syllable. By the time Lair close with a roaring rendition of ‘The Wolf’ the crowd are totally converted and unable to resist the impulse to spend all their precious beer money of every piece of merch available. While I selfishly wish to keep Lair as one of my dirty secrets their immanent fame is painfully apparent…..or it damn well should be.
