KANYE WEST
LIVE AT THEATRE ROYAL DRURY LANE LONDON 26/2/06

by Bootleg Al

Dude’s a genius. Slammed in between a label approved soulless arena tour is a special one-off Kanye theatre date. Sitting there in the aisle jammed between a row of 17 year old preppy private-school kids and a scattering of hardened hip-hop heads I contemplate the evening ahead with slight fear and apprehension of the fact that many hip-hop shows are just plain bad, Eminem being a sore example.

After keeping the crowd waiting characteristically long the curtain finally falls to reveal a half orchestra and a moor of dry-ice. As Kanye struts out onto the stage in bright white jacket and Elvis inspired glasses the crowd erupt into euphoria at the sight of their new king.

Kanye has been on the scene as an artist in his own right for barely three years but already off the back of just 2 albums his set plays like a greatest-hits. Of course Kanye has one of the biggest egos in music but who wouldn’t with an arsenal this good? At just the opening bars of each track the crowd erupts with excitement that just grows and grows to the set closing highlight of ‘Touch the Sky’. And just in case two platinum albums worth of hits aren’t enough to win you over Kanye breaks for a 15 minute interlude as DJ A-Trak plays us a selection of Kanye production highlights. Not since I bought that ’68 special-edition Elvis comeback show DVD have I seen just one-man manage to transfix and excite a crowd to such exhilarating and extravagant effect.
