by Tom ‘Soliloquy’ Ginn Jel by name, Jel by nature, this, his second LP is a beautiful mix of ambient electronica and twisted beats, fused together with serious foot-tapping intent. This is perhaps the soundtrack to a robotic disco somewhere in the future, but the robots would have souls and move with slickly oiled precision. There is a definite fight in this record, between light and dark, good and evil, human and machine, resulting in an intriguing album to suit many different moods that will bring you up but leave a sense of melancholy hanging in your stomach. Jel is particularly adept at using samples to break accessibility into his landscapes, his soul and hip hop influences shine through and blend seamlessly with his trademark old skool drum machines. If RJD2 had his favorite kitten kidnapped and held to ransom this is the album he might make in his grief. A challenging but highly satisfying listen, Soft Money will not disappoint.
