ANAAL NATHRAKH - ESCHATON (Seasons of Mist)

by Rich Colwill

These guys have some serious issues to be pumping out this kind of music, my guess is they don’t want to get locked up for committing a criminal felony. Eschaton is 35 minutes of pure brutal metal.

Opener ‘Bellum Omnium Contra Omnes’ kick-starts the record with a fierce sample of a blasting furnace before V.I.T.R.I.O.L.'s vocals kick in. Having listened to this record a few times the melodic guitar patterns and clean singing style which was used on previous outing 'Domine Non Es Dignus' it used widely on Eschaton.

’Between Shit and Piss We Are Born’ is the most accessible track here, even though there is a fair bit of experimenting going on. For 'The Yellow King' ‘proper’ lyrics are abandoned completely as they utilise weird messed up vocal noises accompanied by some evil samples similar to ones that appeared on their debut album The Codex Necro.

Anaal have kept it true by adding a couple guest slots, like Napalm's Bassist Shane Embury and Mayhems Attila Csihar who does vocals on the end track, it is not overly noticeable but keeps the music tight.

Any previous fans will not be disappointed with this effort from the kings of necro. But I’m afraid to say I will always go back to The Codex Necro for the sheer brutality and head banging madness. I hope they sort out a live act again soon as music this brutal would be tragic to miss.
