LOW - DRUMS AND GUNS (Sub Pop)

by Tommy G

Low take a minor departure from their usual downbeat, minimalistic, folk-rock to produce what I conceive to be their most polished album to date. Searching through the dark depths of the human soul and dredging up a sequence of the most beautiful funeral dirges you are ever likely to hear, Drums and Guns is like a tornado, it takes nothingness and turns it into something epic. Swirling about in a midst of electronica and violins, laced with Mimi Parkers haunting vocals you are scared to get too close for fear of being sucked in and never returning.

This album is so well rounded that its hard to pick stand out tracks, as soon as the first proper song ‘Belarus’ begins creeping out of your speakers you know you’re in for a special journey. ‘Always Fade’ and ‘Murderer’ deserve special credit for still being able to send a shiver down my spine after the umpteenth listen, however everything in between is conjured up with a sinister and unerringly beauty that pulls you into their music. Its just a shame I have to sleep with the lights on now….a small price to pay though for what will surely be one of 07’s standout albums. Superb.
