by Prohibition Order The problem with teenagers today is that in an era of alternative ‘geek-chic’ *shudder* these nerds/dorks/geeks, whatever you want to call them, are no-longer the outcast loser high-school kids that breed monumental recordings resisting mainstream culture ideals as they forge their own alternative youth-culture. ‘Be Your Own Pet’ are a four piece out of Nashville USA who in the face of a media whirlwind of hype have finally released their highly anticipated self-titled debut. Growing up on a steady diet of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Strokes sorry I mean Blondie and Sonic Youth, Be Your Own Pet serve up a dry, derivative instalment of excitable teenage garage pap. I read an interview with this band in Filter last month and the singer was banging on about how she gets pissed off that guys come to her shows and gawk at her instead of enjoying the ‘music’. Well what does she expect when she’s 17 and dresses as she does, have you seen those heavy black lined stripper eyes she has. I’ll tell you one thing I’m not watching them at Reading for the music.
