ISIS - IN THE ABSENCE OF TRUTH (Ipecac)

by Steve W

Isis's stellar progression from the murky pure heaviness of their debut The Red Sea to the skyscraping innovation of 2004's Panopticon has been a joy to behold for fans of the band. Unfortunately this album marks the point where the bands meteoric rise levels off. When viewed as a single entity this is still a great record, intelligent, dynamic and challenging in its juxtaposition of subtle ambience and brutal aggression, and in 'Dulcinea' and 'Holy Tears' it contains two of the bands finest songs to date. However, it is simply not as good as Oceanic or Panopticon, their previous two albums. Aaron's vocals don’t seem to fit as well with the music as they did in the past, the riffs in the album's heavier moments don’t quite electrify your spine like they should and some of the quieter passages lack intensity and direction, as if they are simply biding time. Not so much a step back as a step sideways, here's hoping this fine band can keep striding forward with their next release.
