65DAYSOFSTATIC / THE ANSWER

LIVE REVIEW 18/5/06

Very few bands are able to get me to walk down to the Concorde 2 in Brighton when its gale force and pissing down with rain but bands like 65daysofstatic don’t come along very often. First however I must ordeal the Answer.

While the Darkness (RIP) are all comedy ball-viceing falsettos and over the top guitar riffs, the Answer are errrrr......painfully un-ironic comedy ball-viceing falsettos and over the top guitar riffs. Sounding like a watered down and tepid Led Zeppelin infected with the sole of Lynard Skynard the Answer are neither answering nor offering anything. Now don’t get me wrong the Answer are most certainly not a terrible band by any stretch of the imagination, they write pleasant inoffensive ‘classic rock’ that you can get drunk to and pretend as if the 70s never ended. As I bite my tongue and withhold from shouting out for ‘Stillwater’ or ‘Blues Hammer’ songs, my friend manages to sum up the band perfectly as “a very good pub band”. Sorry guys.

Fortunately the turn over between bands is relatively short and before my friend and I can agree on who was the singer in Sillwater (it’s that one from ‘My Name is Earl’) I can hear the opening strings and driving drill and bass beats of 65daysofstatic penetrating from the other room. Coming on like an Aphex Twin remix of a Trent Reznor produced Godspeed You Black Emperor track (Ed - god imagine that!) is one hell of an entrance. At moments brutally chaotic and at others delicately controlled ‘65days’ manage to powerhouse their way through all their ‘hits’ to a now capacity venue of wet, seething bodies. The only downside for me was ‘65days’ over-dependence upon pre-recorded tracks, at times it was quite disconcerting to notice the drummer playing only partial segments of the drum track and of course it would have been nice to actually re-create some of the string segments. Having said that, the segments that ‘65days’ do play live are played with such sheer force and brutality that they rock harder than any band I’ve seen in a long time……oh and did I mention they’re post-rock?! Go figure!
