Sole and the Skyrider Band – Sole and the Skyrider Band (Anticon)

Words: Tom Ginn

A few months ago I bought the ‘Mansbestfriend’ record, a mixture of beats, breaks and skits that left me a little cold. For the first time I thought Tim Holland had missed the target and it was with certain trepidation that I slipped ‘Sole & the Skyrider Band’ into my cd player, pressed play and cranked the volume.

I realised quickly my fear was misplaced, back in his ‘Sole’ guise Holland was showing all the intelligence, guile, wit and dark sarcasm that has made him almost deity like in the realms of leftfield hip-hop. Teaming up with a trio from Orlando ‘Skyrider’ this album offers something of a live and organic feel to proceedings. Darker than ever before with hints of heavy metal, drone and dub, Sole is in impeccable lyrical form.

‘This christian lady at pizza hut used to say god had his hands on me. I wonder if he still does, and if he is he must be strangling me. with his magnifying glass pointing fire at my feet. “I love the way you dance while you cry, while you’re dying in the street”…..’

Yes the world is a bit fucked up but Sole adds some humour to the hypocrisy and power struggles. Marvellous.
