High on Fire w/ Russian Circles
Birmingham Barfly (
October ‘07)

Words: Steve Weston

Ahh, good old live rock 'n' roll. Outside the Barfly the city is dark, wet and oppressive but inside Matt Pike and his band are testifying with an intensity and volume that grips your depression by the balls and slaps a silly grin onto its face.

New tracks are played, old tracks are played and, although our friends subtlety and diversity are left enjoying a beer in Russian Circles dressing room, the crowd, whilst seemingly initially reluctant to 'rock', are swept up by High on Fire's sheer pace and enthusiasm until the Barfly smiles as one.

Earlier the aforementioned Russian Circles instrumental maelstrom shifts and writhes like a snake on a BBQ, exploring delicate guitar lines and interplay before changing gear like a John Woo action flick and exploding into rhythmic heaviness, bringing to mind Pelican with an attitude problem. Filling out their live sound with loops and effects they are, frankly, fucking excellent. Both bands for 12 quid? Bargain.
