Words: Lucy Britner Why put the body where the body don’t want to go? Thing is, it’s hard to resist throwing yourself around to Future of the Left’s debut album, Curses. Mclusky’s Andy Falkous, Jarcrew’s Kelson Mathias and drummer Jack Egglestone aren’t afraid to make noise. A lot of noise. The album kicks off with The Lord Hates A Coward and 13 more sharp, loud and often comic songs spit themselves out one after the other. Political flecks like Fuck The Countryside Alliance with the lyrics “tories, tories, thanks for the tories, you sleep with the devils”, creep in every now and again and the main thrust of the sound comes from raw guitar and often screamed, repeated vocals including the line “why put the body where the body don’t want to go”, from Plague of Onces. The
whole chaotic stew is held together by Egglestone’s metronome-like
drumming and the band’s tireless attention to structure. Tracks
like adeadenemyalwayssmellsgood and Manchasm are bolshy and addictive.
The future? It’s definitely of the left. |
