You wait all day
for a bus and then two come at once! In
the same week that we announce the line-up for volume 2 of our OIB Records
split 7” series we go and announce volume 3! How’s that
for progress!
Lovvers
– Boys Club / Vox Pop
Just when you thought you have the OIB Records split
series sussed out we go and throw out 2 minutes of searing punk-noise
courtesy of the Midlands finest Lovvers.
Breaking from our routine slightly ‘Boys Club / Vox Pop’
is technically two songs in one. Its two minutes of bratish and demanding
lo-fi danceable punk, this is pretty much what indie discos would sound
like if the Strokes hadn’t fucked it all up 6 years ago. Imagine
the Butthole Surfers jamming with the
Minutemen! Sold? Thought so. And I didn’t even need to
tell you that the band features the singer from the seminal UK post-metal
band The Murder of Rosa Luxemburg… www.myspace.com/letscommunicate
Knyfe
Hyts – Hyts of Summer
During the writing process for the eagerly awaited new
Ex Models album, Zach and Shahin ended
up inadvertently writing a bunch of gnarly post-stoner rock jams. Deciding
that they weren’t quite right for Ex Models, Zach and Shahin teamed
up with their old buddies from Pterodactyl
and Oneida to form a more pure-rock band
influenced by the classic rock bands they grew up listening to but given
that demandingly hypnotic edge that Ex Models are so famous for. Their
early recordings are rough over-driven and distorted messes of brilliance.
Here on ‘Hyts of Summer’, Knyfe
Hyts offer up their most accessible and exciting recording to
date. Its two minutes of scuzzed out guitars and falsetto vocals that
quickly builds into an aggressive psych-rock freak-out. www.myspace.com/knyfehyts
Best
Fwends – Hail
Hailing from Austin Texas, claiming friendship with
Gene Defcon, and making spazzy heavily punk-influenced electro-pop,
Best Fwends have been an OIB Records HQ favourite for a very long time
now. Following on from last years ‘Alphabetically Arranged’
album on Moshi Moshi comes their new demented
punk masterpiece ‘Hail’. Their cover for the split
7” is made up of old metal fonts (a prize if you can get them
all), our personal favourite is the use of the Fear Factory logo for
the ‘f’ of fwends, amazing! www.myspace.com/bestfwends
The
Death Set – Zombie
Having released our favourite album of 2008 in the shape
of ‘Worldwide’ (Ninja Tune / Counter records) we just had
to get The Death Set on our punk volume
of the split series. Drenched with b-movie samples and grotesque brain-eating
lyrics ‘Zombie’ is a furious heavily punk influenced
electro track that features ludicrously fast keys, a killer punk ruff,
and Johnny’s trademark high-pitched rapid-fire punk snarl. www.myspace.com/thedeathset
Volume
3 is set for a late October 2008 release throughout Europe via Southern
Records and our own OIB Records webstore.
As with volume
1, volume 3 comes with 4 different reversible
gatefold covers, lyric sheet (not all bands) and one-inch
badges designed by all the bands involved. The run
is limited to just 450 copies with no repress! The 5 volume
series will culminate in late 2009 with a vinyl boxset (limited to 50
copies) and CD compilation.
Cover images, badge
designs and pre-order info coming soon. In
the meantime here’s a sneak peak at The Death Set and Best Fwends
covers:
