THE GUILTY PLEASURES OF GENE JUPITER DEFCON B.A.

A few weeks ago we were chatting with Retard Disco’s international superstar signing Gene Defcon about the possibility, or lack of, of him playing the UK one day. This conversation quickly turned, as they so often do, to our mutual admiration for the cinematic masterpiece that is ‘Dumb and Dumber’.

With this realisation that Gene is one hell of a dude we decided to ask him if he’d be interested in writing a short piece for the OIB zine called ‘the guilty pleasures of Gene Defcon’. Now if you’ve ever heard any of his avant-pop party anthems then you’ll know that Gene has an amazing sense of humour and style. What we didn’t know was just how witty the man really is! Gene, we salute you.

The Top 5 Guilty Pleasures of Gene Jupiter Defcon, BA

1. Glen Campbell - was arrested for drunk driving in November of 2003. He was found guilty and spent 10 days in jail. I can't stand his mellowman smooth vocal stylings but I admit to having "Wichita Lineman" on my broken iPod because it is truly an amazing, melancholy song that gives me the creeps.

2. R. Kelly - was arrested in June 2002 and found guilty of soliciting a minor for child pornography. I truly appreciate his amazing songwriting abilities and candy coated vocals. Except for the song "I Believe I Can Fly". That song destroys my fragile optimism regarding life. I prefer him when he is being sexual, not positive, and this can be a problem in light of the nature of his criminality.

3. Scott Weiland - pleaded guilty to battering his wife in of December 2001. While I do not condone such behavior nor much of Stone Temple Pilots' music including such 90's cultural touchstones as "Half the Man I Used to Be", I admit to really liking a couple of their late period radio hits. I think that perhaps they discovered acid and the Beatles around this time and in their attempt to imitate them they washed ashore onto the same island where "Green Tambourine" resides. Namely, the island of faux psychadelic top 40 bliss. See "Tripping On a Whole in a Paper Heart".

4. 50 Cent - pleaded guilty to peddling heroin and crack in August 1994. I don't care for his mostly crappy music which seems to strive for the same kind of sex braggadocio that R. Kelly effortlessly achieves. The difference: 50 Cent raps like he has a mouth full of Mealworms and is about as clever as one, to boot. All that being said, however, I can listen to "In Da Club" about a million times in a row and not get tired of it.

5. Nate Dogg - pleaded guilty in May 2002 to charges of drugs and weapons possession. As you can tell I am a sucker for smooth voiced criminals (except not Glen Campbell style smooth) and Nate Dogg is the smoothest. I don't own any rap 12"s EXCEPT "Regulate" starring Nate Dogg and Warren G. So good.
