OIB Records Recording Artists:

Lonely Ghosts is the alter-ego of Brighton musician Tom Denney. Since 2006 he has used this guise to explore what he considers to be 'pop' music in whatever shape or form it may take. From his home studio he creates an eclectic mix of songs blending a number of different sounds and styles, including casio-pop, moody synth-scapes, shoegaze guitar drones, woozy harmonies, post-punk, electronica, hip-hop drum beats and emotive vocals.

Lonely Ghosts first came into being while Tom was still playing in indie-noise heroes Help She Can't Swim, and has come into its own since their split in 2008. Lonely Ghosts maintains elements that will be recognizable to those familiar to with HSCS's sound but with a much broader scope in instrumentation and style. The release of 2008's well received debut mini-album 'Don't Get Lost or Hurt' cemented both Denney's 'pop' songwriting knack and Lonely Ghosts as his main musical focus.

“Following on from his debut single release ‘Prediction for the New Year’, Lonely Ghosts releases his debut mini-album ‘Don’t Get Lost or Hurt’ on CD and Download featuring 8 new tracks recorded with Justin Callaway (the producer of the Help She Can’t Swim album ‘The Death of Nightlife’). Musically broader and more personal than his previous output in Help She Can’t Swim, ‘Don’t Get Lost or Hurt’ sees demanding electro beats and casio keys rubbing shoulders with classical instruments, sweeping string sounds, and forgotten tape noise.

"Delectable slices of symphonic pop" - Rock Sound

"Comparisons to his ex-band Help She Can't Swim are inevitable but this is gentler bedroom indie with layers of lush instrumentation…proof that sometimes ir can be an idea to give up your day job" - Plan B

Mewgatz, named after a child's mispronunciation (or is that misconception) of music, is the twisted brain-child of Ed McGregor. Originating from a velux windowed, floral carpeted attic in the Midlands with nothing more than a collection of old abandoned Yamaha synths, Amiga's, and V-tech speaking teachers, Mewgatz quickly turned his electronic graveyard into his own personal sanctuary where he taught himself the warped art of circuit-bending.

His guerrilla art-form involves taking an electronic noise making device and intentionally buggering about with its circuitry, finding and soldering in short-circuits to create new sounds that were never before thought possible or even desirable. It's these unpredictable sounds and harsh mechanical exteriors that Mewgatz then melds into his weird and wonderful organic electronic monologues. It's a delicate process that Mewgatz considers as his "personal quest, to find that fleeting moment where in the void between human fragility and robotic malfunction, unpredictability and stability can collide".

Falling somewhere between the Magnetic Fields and Squarepusher, these rich and subversive musical compositions are brought to life by Mewgatz trademark humble and bittersweet lyrics surrounding the themes of 'lost and found love' and his continued frustration at electronic music's incessant dependency upon modern technology.

“Constructed around the brain of a £3 Yamaha keyboard and an 80's keytar, Mewgatz debut ‘Underfelt’ EP is 30 minutes of dark and harrowing basement pop. Paying homage to his fascination with original keyboard presets and demo songs, Mewgatz fuses glitching preset bossanova beats with delicate guitar chord progressions and tender untrained vocals, schizophrenically remixing popular contemporary tracks until they’re bent out of all recognition. These are lo-fidelity electronic ballads drenched in raw, passionate, and vulnerable emotion, a true testament to his quest for melodic chaos, to find that void between human fragility and robotic malfunction where unpredictability and stability collide.

"Tender mechanics and loft-space constellations…as unloved mini-robots put out tiny feelers into the cosmos Mewgatz feeds them with crystallised quizzical melodies" - Plan B

"Makes the more difficult moments of Radiohead's 'Kid A' sound like a Cheeky Girls single" - Rockmidgets.com

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone is the musical alias of 30 year old American film school drop-out Owen Ashworth. Ashworth began his intricate ventures into abstract emotional music in 1997 after he realized that song-making was a far more cost-effective means of storytelling than film-making. To date, he has produced five CFTPA albums, released through Tomlab, that have defined a hybrid strain of raw, emotional and very homemade synth pop, this is instantly recognizable as his own. Claustrophobic two-minute character studies shuddered with reverbed beats, blown-out chords and simple but infectious melodies, all layered beneath Ashworth's bittersweet lyrical odes to love lost.

“Town Topic is the soundtrack EP for the American independent film Stay The Same Never Change by the critically acclaimed New York / Los Angeles artist Laurel Nakadate. Bathed in the blinding light and sticky heat of Kansas City’s summer, Stay The Same Never Change utalises both amateur and first-time actors to create a fictional account of everyday lives and a portrait of a real place. It’s an unsettling coming-of-age story delivered through the real-life experiences of youth in the American Midwest.

"Genius name, dark and stormy electronica - the sound of the astronauts on the international space station having a jam session whilst waiting for their new pump, and beaming the results to a teddy bears picnic back on earth." - Subba Cultcha

"You don't get much more jingly than 'Ice Cream Truck', it's a CFTPA classic, chuffing along in a swirling analogue dreamworld, his hazy downbeat mumble complementing the euphoric keyboard that really does sound the most ice creamy thing ever...he gets out the distorto pedal for closer, an alternative version of 'Green Cotton Sweater' that sounds like the most beautiful song ever made buried under a jackhammer electro beat stuck in a fuzzy loop. Genius." - Norman Records

Sons of Noel and Adrian was formed in 2007 by best friends, Jacob Richardson and Tom Cowan. After years of writing and performing together in the drunken brewery town of Burton-Upon-Trent these two troubadour guitar players parted ways for art school and European travel adventures, only to be re-united years later on the south-eastern shores of Brighton.

Having long shared a passion for rich, layered and intricate guitar music, the 'Sons…' deep musical exploration quickly developed into a unique and mesmerizing style, brooding on the dark fringes of folk, crossing genres and quickly setting them apart from their contemporaries.

“Now recording as a twelve piece collective the 'Rivers EP' is a collection of dark, folk-noir tracks written by Jacob Richardson that explore three very differing concepts through a single shared metaphor which was brought about by "three gruelling days in the hottest sun fishing with Jack on the wrong side of the river". EP opener and live favourite 'Black Side of the River' came directly from this experience. The theme is then continued through the powerful second track 'Big, Bad, Bold' which surrounds the concept of "the inner strength of a woman", finally 'Leaving Mary's Hand' brings the EP to a thought provoking close as Jacob contemplates "a state of love and trust".

Comprising two musical idiot savants from Austin Texas Best Fwends make heavily punk-influenced spazzy-electro-pop, however the band themselves claim to not be talented enough to have a 'sound'. Recorded during their most severe periods of sleep deprivation using a cheap computer and anything else that happens to be lying around, Best Fwends grabbed the attention of the Moshi Moshi label who released the 2007 album 'Alphabetically Arranged', not to mention Bacardi who used Best Fwends first ever bedroom recording for their 2006 television commercial. Following the "we don't need a stage" ethic of The Death Set, Lightning Bolt and the Coachwhips, Best Fwends can be found in basements the world over wearing nothing but their underwear and screaming in the faces of unsuspecting teenagers.

Recently described by Fused magazine as “two subterranean creatures dressed in primary school P.E. kits, complete with charcoal-stained eyes and badly-concealed erections”, Gay Against You are the enthusiastic, messy and overly friendly duo of Lachlann Rattray and Joe Howe, who inhabit the middle ground between Cyndi Lauper and the Locust. Part of the post-punk-happy-hardcore electro movement made famous by DJ Scotch Egg, Adaadat, and the Wrong Music collectives, GvsY make aggressive spaz-core electronic party music that’s confrontational, demanding, and very, very fun. One of the most hardworking bands on the circuit, in the year and a half since they formed, GvsY have extensively toured with Lightning Bolt, Coughs, Park Attack, Esquilax, Shitmat, Misty’s Big Adventure, Volcano, Help She Can’t Swim, DJ Scotch Egg, Noxagt, and Shitdisco amongst others.

With a name loosely taken from an occurrence in the Old Testament, Half-handed Cloud is an interesting phenomenon. John Ringhofer, the man behind the namesake, is a joyful and frugal musician from Berkeley California who when not on tour as a solo artist, can be found as the trombonist for Sufjan Stevens' Illinoisemakers, or as occasional bass player for Danielson. His complex and artistic music encapsulates his struggle to make sense of his life. In Half-handed Cloud this is expressed as an all-consuming search for God. Half-handed Cloud is able to ensconce complicated theological concepts into playful avant-pop songs without condescending to his subject or to his listener.

During the writing process for the eagerly awaited new Ex Models album, Zach Lehrhoff and Shahin Motia (also of Oneida) ended up inadvertently writing a bunch of hypnotic and overdriven stoner-rock jams. Deciding that they weren't quite right for Ex Models, Zach and Shahin teamed up with ex-Ex Model Shahyar Motia to form Knyfe Hyts. Reborn as Bubo V, Brother Khatamkari, and Brother Minakari, Knyfe Hyts have to-date just released two tape/CDR releases 'Knyfe Hyts' and 'Sword of the Lord' on the Brooklyn 'Party Store' label, recorded in what the band term "the Knyfe Hyts sound". These rough and ready lo-fi jams take the demanding and overblown guitar sensibilities of the classic metal bands of yore and combine it with a healthy dose of psychedelia and those trademark Ex Models hypnotic rhythms.

Hailing from Nottingham England but now living out of beaten tour buses the world over, Lovvers are a lo-fi skuzzy dance-punk four-piece featuring members of the seminal UK post-metal band The Murder of Rosa Luxemberg. Re-calling the spirit of Darby Crash's Germs, the weirdness of Flipper, Wipers style pop, the driving rhythm of the Minutemen, and the careless attitude of The Replacements, Lovvers are a chaotic yet organised mess of fractured guitar, hard-hitting drums, and mangled vocals. Now signed to the Wichita label Lovvers have played over 200 gigs since they formed in 2006 touring with bands including the Butthole Surfers, No Age, Times New Viking, Abe Vigoda, Jay Reatard, Mika Miko, Fucked Up, and Black Lips.

“Hailing from Nottingham England but now living out of beaten tour buses the world over, Lovvers are a lo-fi scuzzy dance-punk four-piece featuring members of the seminal UK post-metal band The Murder of Rosa Luxemberg. Technically two songs in one 'Boys Club / Vox Pop' is two minutes of searing bratish punk-noise that sounds like the Butthole surfers jamming with the Minutemen and the Germs!

Hailing from Bristol UK and named after an outright lie spread by his girlfriend (that his middle names were Jeremiah Esau), Sam Wisternoff aka SJ Esau was the first proper UK signing to the seminal US leftfield-rap label Anticon. His style is a patchwork of mashed-genres from hip-hop to folk, all fused together through multi-layered instruments and his distinctive vocal delivery. SJ Esau is one of those rare artists that you could call an 'innovator', the diversity and development in his music is astonishing. He manages to pack in a whole host of different ideas without ever drawing you away from his essentially quaint recordings.

“Hot off the heels of his second album proper for Anticon comes the new SJ Esau recording 'Part of a Diagram'. Now we've been fans of SJ Esau's musical patchwork style for years, his ability to blend multiple genres as diverse as hip-hop and folk together with such astonishing dexterity is incredible, but when Sam Wisternoff aka SJ Esau told us "it's more rock than my usual stuff" we certainly weren't prepared for this! In just three and a half minutes SJ Esau delivers driving guitar riffs, hypnotic drum rhythms, multi-layered off-kilter chanting, and delicate piano, all wrapped around his distinctive yet humble vocal delivery.

Named after a lyric from the track ‘people’ by the Silver Jews, Suburban Kids With Biblical Names are a twee electro-pop outfit that couldn't be from anywhere else but Sweden! Their playful and extremely catchy pop music caught the ears of Sonic Magazine in early 2004 who subsequently put out their debut release as part of a Sonic compilation. Soon after that they signed to Labrador Records, who in 2005 released the critically acclaimed album '#3'. Still working on the follow-up album, SKWBN are taking a quick break to release their new track 'God Save Roger Nichols' via OIB Records.

“After a way too long hiatus, Sweden's finest electro-twee-pop outfit are back with the 4 minute pop opus 'God Save Roger Nichols'. It's pure Suburban Kids as you know and love them, delicate keys, xylophones, progressive drum loops, perfect guitar riffs, and those infectious and upfront vocals that get stuck in your head for days. It's a sure fire indie-disco floor filler.

Hailing from Baltimore USA, by way of the Gold Coast, Australia, The Death Set was formed by Johnny Siera and Beau Velasco in 2005. Both drawn to each others reckless care of music, Johnny and Beau united to write fleeting songs with infectious hooks and overdriven melody. Following two home-recorded EPs ('To' and 'Rad Warehouses Bad Neighborhoods') The Death Set signed to Ninja Tune off-shoot Counter Records in 2008 and released their debut album 'Worldwide', which within 25 relentless minutes they manage to fit in 18 tracks of reckless electro-punk abandon. Heavily influenced by traditional punk bands such as Black Flag, Minor Threat, and Buzzcocks, The Death Set channel their 'punk roots' through their love for hip-hop beats, and mad-capped electronica.

“Having released one of our favourite albums of 2008, 'Worldwide' (Ninja Tune / Counter Records), we just had to get The Death Set on the 'punk' volume of our OIB Records split series. Formed by Johnny Siera and Beau Velasco in Australia in 2005, the band soon relocated to Baltimore USA and began to tear up every house-party in sight with their heavily punk-influenced electro and reckless disregard for instruments. Drenched with b-movie samples and grotesque brain-eating lyrics 'Zombie' is a furious, electro-punk track that features ludicrously fast keys, 'killer' riffs, and Johnny's trademark high-pitched rapid-fire punk snarl.

Originally from the dark wilderness of West Yorkshire, The Hornblower Brothers came to the south coast in 2007 armed with just a melodica, bontempi & acoustic guitar, and began writing songs about everything from watching car chases on the TV - to caterpillars becoming butterflies. Interested in doing little else but putting ramshackle pop to Nathaniel's rhymes, their irresistible folk-pop antics have gained them a loyal battalion of fans and earned them a string of sold out shows with Jeffrey Lewis, Noah and the Whale, The XX and Metronomy. Already lauded by the likes of Steve Lamacq, Transparent Magazine and Marc Riley, prepare for The Hornblower Brothers to blow your socks off.

The Tumbledown Estate is a one-man avant-pop explosion, orchestrated by the indie-surf eccentric Jim Morrison (no, not that one). Sounding frantic, passionate and off the wall one moment and chock full of over powering pop goodness the next, the Tumbledown Estate come on like Stephen Merritt and Of Montreal jamming out Blur tunes with the Bronx, if you can imagine such a thing! We’ve never truly understood the warped mind of the Tumbledown Estate, but if we did it probably wouldn’t be as much fun.

“The first volume in our limited edition split 7" series. Each volume is built around a loose musical theme with four artists that share a similar ethos in their approach to music construction. As a release the OIB Records split series is designed to provide an outlet for its acts to experiment more widely and create something outside the parameters of the more cohesive album or EP format.
